Many people presume that once you’ve hit 50, you don’t need to invest in stylish and sexy clothes. In my opinion, this is totally wrong. In fact, you can be as trendy and fashionable as you have always been or even more. Think Jennifer Aniston, Hally Berry, Jennifer Connelly, Naomi Watts, Viola Davis (hello?), among others. Age has nothing to do with style. I am picturing Jane Fonda right now and can’t help but smile, she is so admirable! And she is in her 80’s. Don’t forget that women age gracefully, and like fine wine, they only get better with time. Two years ago I had a “half-century birthday” reunion in my small town in Spain, and I kid you not, but all the women there looked amazing, however, the guys did not, except for maybe one or two.

The key is knowing how to flaunt your body and sensibility in a way that works for you. Style is about self-expression and, above all, attitude. Dress up for yourself, not for others, and feel the pleasure.

In the past, women were expected to dress a certain way after a certain age and follow a set of rules. This is not the case anymore. Regardless of your age, we know now that fashion for women is whatever a woman wants it to be. The real challenge is finding wearable, modern clothes to fit your budget, lifestyle, and figure.

It’s not about following every single trend that influencers promote all over the place. However, don’t be afraid of embracing new waves of style. All you need to do is find a way to work those trends into your personal style and wardrobe. It is a matter of combining the different pieces and put the puzzle together to your liking. We all know that all those fashion magazines tend to ignore women our age, so find your inspiration in the different celebrities’ styles. Being self-aware and informed can solve a lot of your shopping nightmares. Knowing your body type will definitely help, so you know that if a pair of jeans are not fitting or don’t look a certain way, it does not imply you are disproportionate. We need to work around, to know how and where to look.

The 12 commandments to dress with style (and look youthful and current while you do it)

  1. Forget about shapeless garments, and flaunt your silhouette, regardless of your shape. Everything “oversize” is a no-no. This should be rule#1.

  2. Pay attention to fit. If clothes are fitted well, a lot of things that are an issue are no longer problematic.

  3. Make sure you are wearing the right bra size. If you haven’t yet, you should have your bra properly fitted (many department stores offer this service). Wearing the right size and the right bra makes a world of difference, and I am not kidding.

     Seamless Underwear

  4. Good hair can make all the difference. Keep yourself looking current with a great haircut and color. It’s worth it to invest in a good hairstylist. You can be wearing the perfect outfit and the perfect accessories, but if the hairstyle or cut or color is wrong, it will ruin the whole thing.
  5. Accessorize! Accessories can be transformational. Invest in a good quality handbag. Opt for daintier jewelry; it’s chicer to be on the minimalist side.

  6. However, if you like statement earrings like me, by any means, go ahead and wear them, but tone down the rest of the jewelry. And don’t forget the little things: sunglasses, wallet, scarves.
  7. Don’t be afraid of color. I love color, and there is nothing sadder than a woman always wearing black, grey, and brown. Try the hot pink trend, experiment with the bright colors that complement your complexion best.

  8. Choose your staples. Invest in a well-tailored blazer, a white or cream classic blouse, a high-quality fabric black sweater, a go-to nice dress.

    The Perfect Blazer

  9. Find the right pair of jeans. Embrace dark rinse denim in crisp, new condition. Darker jeans look more polished, whereas light denim reads a bit more casual. Stay away from intentionally distressed denim, and it will not make you look younger. But remember, most important is the fit, not the wash. Pair those jeans with that well-tailored jacket, and you will look like a million bucks.                                                                                                                     Shop jeans

  10. Choose where to draw the eye and where to draw attention away. It’s all about subtlety and strength for women our age. If you want to conceal your arms or stomach, you need to know how to do it using the right clothes.
  11. Don’t forget the shoes! Trust me on this one; the perfect outfit can be completely ruined by pairing it with the wrong shoes. On the other hand, the right shoes can do wonders for an otherwise forgettable look. Choose comfort, quality, and versatility over trends when it comes to shoes. Every woman should have at least a go-to pair of heels, high-quality classic boots, or, if you prefer, some designer flats.

  12. Take risks. Mix it up,  play with clothing items, don’t be afraid of prints, wear red (it’s a power color, and it looks good on everyone), find the perfect statement ring. It’s all about experimenting.

    Stand Out Pieces

  13. Define your waist. Regardless of your body type, it would be best if you avoided shapeless clothes at any cost. Chose a wide beautiful belt or tied a nice scarf around your middle section.

     Statement Belt

In conclusion, as you age you should know how to own your style and dress for the pleasure of it, dress for yourself, no matter what. Investing in a few key pieces will extend your wardrobe and aid define your very unique personal style. Feel and look sexy without revealing too much. Highlight your best features, and leave the rest a mystery. Every woman likes to feel beautiful and sexy, but think “sensual” rather than sexy. Try rich fabrics and deep colors to channel a powerful and feminine vibe, and remember, it’s all about finding the balance.

In future blog posts, I will elaborate further on the concept of style when you are 50+. Stay tuned!

Let’s keep inspiring each other!
